036 VOL.36 Sho-Fu-An: An In-Hotel Tea Ceremony Room That Conveys Traditional Japanese Culture

2019.1.8 Tue.

Opening the shoji screen reveals a small room of four and a half tatami mats with a standing tea ceremony area, and a woven bamboo ceiling. In the garden path in front of the crawl-through entrance, there is a stone basin for purifying one's hands.

This is Sho-Fu-An-an, a tea room on the 10th floor of Keio Plaza Hotel Main Tower, filled with a tranquil atmosphere. Guests are said to be uniformly surprised by this authentic Japanese space that appears within a skyscraper hotel in the heart of the city. Since the hotel opened in 1971, successive generations of staff have upheld this tradition. The room cleaning staff, who are involved in the management of the historic Sho-Fu-An an every day, take pride in their work and cultivate a sense of responsibility to protect this valuable asset of the hotel with their own hands.

This dignified tea room was designed with guidance from the Urasenke school of tea ceremony. It is still used for tea ceremonies today, and we also offer a tea ceremony service where guests can experience the tea ceremony with explanations in English by a tea ceremony master, which has been well-received by our international guests.

Within a hotel that blends cutting-edge and modern elements, the traditions of Japan breathe life into the atmosphere. Keio Plaza Hotel is also a hotel that continues to convey Japanese culture.
