038 VOL.38 Yusuke Aida’s “Porcelain Garden”

2019.2.5 Tue.

When Keio Plaza Hotel opened in 1971, it was a major topic of conversation that legendary designer Isamu Kenmochi was the art director. Among the many renowned Japanese artists that Kenmochi gathered, one of the young and promising talents was ceramic artist Yusuke Aida. Over the years, Aida has contributed many works to the hotel, including the ceramic walls and objects at the main entrance and throughout the hotel. In 2014, after 44 years since the hotel’s opening, a new piece of art was created for the 3F Cocktail &Tea Lounge, called “Ceramic Garden.”

“Ceramic Garden” was named “Singing to the Moon” and was inspired by a beautiful moonlit night with mountains peeking through a sea of clouds. The ceramic wall features delicate color gradations and the warmth of clay, while the objects in front of the wall represent the energy of the earth. The objects are arranged in an irregular pattern, creating a unique and original piece of art. During the day, the shadows of the Zelkova tree branches are cast on the white sand, and at night, the garden is lit up in a fantastical manner. Depending on the time of day and your seat, the view and impression of the garden will be different, making it a luxurious and relaxing space.

Yusuke Aida has created many public ceramic walls and monuments that bring peace and tranquility to those who view them. “Ceramic Garden” was one of his final works, and it is filled with the unique charm and beauty that only Aida’s works can provide. We hope you enjoy a relaxing moment with tea or cocktails while admiring this beautiful piece of art.
