When Keio Plaza Hotel opened in 1971, it was a major topic of conversation that legendary designer Isamu Kenmochi served as the art director. Among the many renowned Japanese artists that Kenmochi gathered, one of the young and promising talents was ceramic artist Yusuke Aida. Over the years, Aida has contributed numerous works to the hotel, including the ceramic walls and objects in the lobby and throughout the building. In 2014, after 44 years since the hotel’s opening, Aida created a new piece titled “Ceramic Garden” which adorns the windows of the 3F Cocktail & Tea Lounge.
“Ceramic Garden” was named “Tsuki ni Utau” (Singing to the Moon) and was inspired by a beautiful moonlit night with mountains peeking through a sea of clouds. The ceramic wall features delicate color gradations and the warmth of clay, while the art pieces scattered in front of the wall represent the energy of the earth. During the day, the shadows of the Zelkova tree branches are cast on the white sand, and at night, the garden is lit up in a fantastical manner. Depending on the time of day and your seating, the view and impression of the garden will differ, making it a truly luxurious experience.
Yusuke Aida has created many public ceramic walls and monuments that bring peace and tranquility to those who view them. “Ceramic Garden” was one of his final works and is filled with the unique charm that only Aida’s creations possess. We hope you enjoy a relaxing moment with us, accompanied by tea or cocktails.
