044 From Cooking Oil to Soap - Eco-friendly Recycling

2019.6.27 Thu.

Keio Plaza Hotel has been making various efforts towards becoming an ecological and clean hotel since the establishment of the Waste Guidance Committee in 1991.

One of our earliest ecological activities was the separation and recycling of used cooking oil in our kitchens, which began in 1992. The used cooking oil, which is plant-based, is collected by a specialized company, then dehydrated and filtered to be transformed into high-purity fatty acids, which are used as raw materials for cosmetics and recycled soap. Since 2009, the soap has been refined into a gentle grade of liquid soap, which is used in some of the handwashing stations in the hotel’s back-of-house areas.

Used cooking oil, if disposed of improperly, can cause water pollution and release carbon dioxide when burned. By recycling it, we not only reduce waste but also create a stable and sustainable cycle of reuse within our hotel’s back-of-house operations.
