087 Experience Japanese Culture - Hinamatsuri ornaments in the lobby

2022.3.14 Mon.

Hotels are places where people and cultures come and go. Keio Plaza Hotel has many guests from overseas, and we have put a lot of effort into sharing Japanese culture, such as holding fairs featuring Mount Fuji and displaying precious Japanese swords, armor, and helmets. Among these, our “Enjoy Hinamatsuri at the Hotel” event, which started in 2002, is a highly anticipated event that many guests look forward to every year, including those from overseas.

Decorating our main lobby is a grand hanging ornament display consisting of over 4,500 colorful ornaments, and a beautiful tiered display of traditional wooden dolls from Kyoto, created by Mataro Dolls, the only authentic successor of the Kimekomi doll tradition from Kamigamo Shrine. The ornaments were hand-sewn by Mitsuyo Matsuo and the Himawari Group, with each motif symbolizing a wish for the healthy growth of young girls. In addition to traditional motifs, there are also new and modern motifs such as anime characters, which is one of the many things to look forward to. The warm feelings of the creators can be felt through these ornaments.

During the event, we have held various activities such as special Hinamatsuri-themed lunches, workshops, and concerts. We have also introduced new and unique cultural experiences every year, such as Goshoningyo (Imperial Palace dolls), Inuhako (dog-shaped wooden boxes), and traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

Keio Plaza Hotel’s Hinamatsuri event is cherished as an early spring tradition. The beautiful and elegant Japanese culture, which has been passed down through generations and reflects the playful spirit and aesthetics of each era, is a theme that we will continue to cherish and share with our guests.
