Keio Plaza Hotel, overseen by legendary interior designer Isamu Kenmochi, who laid the foundation for Japanese modern design, aimed to be "a Japanese hotel that the world can be proud of." Up-and-coming artists were also invited to contribute to the hotel's art, and their works continue to quietly watch over the hotel's history.
Toko Shinoda (1913-2021), who passed away last year at the age of 107, was an artist who, throughout her more than 70-year career, pioneered a unique realm in abstract expression using ink. Keio Plaza Hotel owns more than 20 of Shinoda's modern and cutting-edge ink paintings, which have captivated many people. Among them, the folding screen painting "Musashi Rokukyoku" that adorns the foyer of Banquet Room on the 4th floor of the South South Tower is a masterpiece created for the French restaurant "Ambrosia" at the time of its opening. Many other works by Shinoda are also displayed throughout Banquet Room, delighting the eyes of our guests.
Soichiro Tomioka (1922-1994), a Western-style painter who depicted a world of snow and established his own unique "world of white" with the completion of a white paint known as "Tomioka White," is one of the artists with deep ties to the hotel. In addition to his works such as lithographs and oil paintings, he also created the aluminum etchings that adorned an entire wall of the bar "Polestar," which was located on the 45th floor when the hotel first opened. His oil painting titled "Keio Plaza" symbolically depicts the hotel standing alone in Nishi-Shinjuku, which still retains traces of Musashi. Of his works, which are created abstractly and figuratively based on black and white, Keio Plaza Hotel owns 15 pieces, and currently four can be viewed in Suite Room rooms and the anteroom of the carillon on the 4th floor of Main Tower.
Keio Plaza Hotel has cherished art since its opening. When you visit, please feel free to come and see the artwork.
