049 Memories of the Ancient Sea, The Ammonite Asleep in Our Lobby Floor

2019.10.4 Fri.

The lobby of Keio Plaza Hotel boasts a spacious floor covered in beautiful marble. But did you know that within it lies a fossil of an ammonite, a marine creature that lived during the Paleozoic era?

Ammonites belonged to the cephalopod group, along with nautiluses, squid, and octopuses, and were characterized by their flat, spiral-shaped shells. They are believed to have become extinct around 65 million years ago, along with the dinosaurs. Marble, which is formed from limestone that has been recrystallized by heat from the accumulation of coral and shell remains, often contains fossils, and in the lobby on3F of South Tower, which uses Rosso Alicante marble from Spain, 18 fossils have been identified so far.

During the summer holidays, approximately 100 children each month participate in an ammonite hunt event, showcasing their detective skills alongside their families. It also provides a fun opportunity for interaction with hotel staff.
The ammonite fossils resting in the lobby tell us about the ancient seas. We encourage you to try and find them!
