Shinjuku’s Traditional Enjoyable Dyeing Experience
We will be holding a regular event called “Enjoying Shinjuku’s Traditions - Dyeing Experience” where you can learn about the charm of dyeing, a local industry, and have a chance to experience it firsthand.
Rediscover the charm of Shinjuku’s local industry and enjoy a special stay experience that allows you to touch upon Japanese culture.
Katazome & Shibori Dyeing Experience
You can experience these traditional crafts under the guidance of artisans from the Shinjuku District Dyeing Association.
Each month, guests create a tote bag (38cm x 35cm) using stencil dyeing techniques, or a shibori (tie-dye) handkerchief (38cm x 38cm), which they can take home as a memorable souvenir from their trip.
What is Katazome?
It is a traditional Japanese technique where a delicate pattern is dyed onto fabric using a stencil. For the experience, you will be dyeing a pattern of azalea flowers onto a convenient shoulder tote bag that has the Keio Plaza Hotel logo stencil dyed onto it. The bag will be dried on the spot to complete the process.
What is Shibori (Japanese Tie-Dye)?
It is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique where parts of the fabric are bound tightly with thread or clamped between boards to prevent dye from penetrating those areas, creating unique patterns. This technique is a type of "shinsen" (immersion dyeing) and is considered one of the foundational methods of dyeing. The fabric is immersed in a mixture of dye and auxiliary agents to achieve the desired coloration.
During the experience, you will take home your dyed handkerchief in a bag. After drying it in your room or at home, it will be considered complete.
